How do birds find food?

Wild birds find food a number of ways, but primarily by sight. Almost all wild birds are opportunistic feeders, so having food in clear view or in highly-traveled areas (such as close to other natural food sources and/or near protective shelter) will increase your chance of attracting birds to the food.

How do birds choose food?

Initially, many wild birds learn eating and feeding habits from their parents and/or the flock. Once on their own, wild birds tend to choose their food through trial and error. Factors that may influence food selection include size, texture and color of the seed or food. Food that provides the most nutrients and energy, such as black oil sunflower seeds, will naturally draw wild birds back to the feeder.

How long will it take before birds begin feeding from my feeder?

The ability to attract wild birds to a feeder is dependent on a number of factors including the season, the types of birds in the area, the types of seed/food in the feeder, or the types of feeders used. Use a premium wild bird food blend that contains quality ingredients like black oil sunflower seed to attract the widest variety of birds. Also consider using several types of feeders placed at different heights—keeping in mind that different birds have different feeding habits and preferences. Most important, be patient as it may take some time before the birds in your area find your feeder(s). But remember … it will definitely be worth the wait!

What difference does the quality of bird food make?

Not all bird food blends are created equal! The quality of the ingredients will significantly impact the number of birds that frequent your feeder(s). Given the need to survive in the wild and sometimes harsh conditions, birds seek food that is naturally high in energy (similar to their natural diet), as well as easy to find and eat. Wild bird food blends containing ingredients such as black oil sunflower, millet and thistle will attract and retain wild birds more effectively than filler grains commonly found in ordinary blends. Birds will often sift through or discard these blends at the feeder(s). Ultimately, the quality of the wild bird food will determine two things: (1) the number and variety of birds that frequent your feeder and (2) the amount of discarded, wasted or uneaten seed.

Can I feed wild birds without making a mess?

Premium wild bird food blends such as Scotts® No-Mess Patio Blend offer no-hull formulas that eliminate discarded shells and uneaten grains. No-Mess Patio Blend contains only premium ingredients, which are eaten by a large variety of wild birds. It also contains ingredients that do not have a shell/hull (such as sunflower hearts), so waste is minimized around the feeder.

Is it important to feed birds year-round?

Wild birds will normally feed on natural sources and use wild bird food as a supplement to their natural diet. However, this need for supplemental food is important year-round and may be even more important at specific times of the year depending on where you live. For example, wild birds begin to look for consistent food supplies as the natural supply begins to disappear, such as in winter. Birds may also require additional, easy-to-find food sources when raising their young, typically in spring and summer. Finally, birds may rely on supplemental food offerings when their favorite foods, such as berries or insects, are not in season.

What is the best way to attract the largest variety of songbirds?

Begin by offering premium wild bird food blends that are formulated specifically to attract a wide variety of birds. For example, Scotts® Multi-Bird Blend, Multi-Bird Blend with Fruits & Nuts and Finch & Small Songbird Blend all effectively attract a wide range of birds. Next, put out several different types of feeders (hopper, tube/silo and platform) placed at different heights and in various locations. This accounts for the different feeding tendencies of different birds. Finally, keep your feeders well-stocked throughout the year to encourage frequent and repeat visits.
